Kazuo Matsui has returned to Japan and joined the Rakuten Eagles after spending seven seasons in the major leagues. The Eagles said Thursday they reached an agreement with the 35-year-old infielder, who played for the New York Mets, Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros from 2004-10. The switch-hitting Matsui was waived by the Astros in May and finished the year in the minors.

The 74-year-old McLane said he's retained the New York investment firm Allen and Company to help him unload the team he purchased in November 1992 for about $117 million. KRIV-TV first reported McLane's agreement with the investment firm.

Infielder Clint Barmes has been traded from the Colorado Rockies to the Houston Astros for pitcher Felipe Paulino. The 31-year-old Barmes hit .235 with 21 doubles, eight homers and 50 RBIs in 387 at-bats this year, down from a .245 average, 23 homers and 76 RBIs in 2009, when he was Colorado's starting second baseman.

Bob Watson will retire at the end of the year as baseball's vice president in charge of discipline. Watson has decided penalties for brawls, intentional hit batters and other matters since 2002 in his role as VP of on-field operations. The retirement was announced by the commissioner's office Tuesday.
