Starting pitcher J.A. Happ has agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Astros, avoiding arbitration. The left-handed Happ and the Astros reached a deal Tuesday for $2.35 million. He made $474,000 last season. Happ had a tough year in 2011, going 6-15 with a 5.35 ERA in 28 starts. He improved at the end of the season and was 2-1 with a 2.43 ERA in his last six starts.

Free agent catcher Chris Snyder has agreed to a one-year contract with the Houston Astros, a deal that includes a 2013 mutual option. The 30-year-old hit .271 with three homers and 17 RBIs in 34 games for Pittsburgh last year, when his season ended in June because of surgery on his lower back. Snyder hit 15 homers with 48 RBIs for the Pirates in 2010.

New Houston Astros owner Jim Crane is considering changing the name of the franchise as well as its uniforms. Crane said Monday the team will conduct a study to decide whether or not to switch the name. “We’re going to study the information both from the fans and from all sorts of marketing people,” Crane said.
