The game today was suspended after a long rain delay in the bottom of the 11th with the game tied 10-10.

So until the game resumes, which will take place on the Nat’s road trip to Houston, the Astros come out of this road trip 4-3.  This 4-3 road trip feels like it has lasted all season and the Astros are coming home beat up.

Usually I would be bummed to see the Astros facing the Cubs in this kind of shape for the next two games but the Cubbies aren’t faring much better these days.

So according to JJO at the Chronicle:

“Jose Valverde is likely out until early to mid June, and I doubt if Doug Brocail returns before June.”

It gets better…

“It’s not even May 6 yet, but the Astros bullpen’s tank may be close to empty. Even worse, it’s unclear how long Roy Oswalt will miss or how much he’ll be affected by the bone bruise in his right index finger.
It would be silly if the Astros try to acquire bullpen arms. Might as well see what the kids can do.
Lance Berkman says this is a mature team, which means this is an old team. Old teams get hurt, as the Astros have often this season.
If they’re 20 games out on July 31, I won’t be surprised. At that point, Valverde should be healthy and able to bring back a few good prospects via trade.
Suck it up, Houston, because this could be a 100-loss team.”

So a month in JJO is saying Houston is going to lose 100 games.  Who knows? They very well could.  I don’t think they will.

Houston may find themselves in a hole come July but they may not.  Everyone though the Stros were screwed last season when Carlos was out and Lance wasn’t hitting but they managed to hang around.

Bring up some arms from RR and see what we can do for the next two months.  Stick Paulino in the rotation and drop Ortiz to the pen.

The big question is Roy.  If he misses a start or two then it wont be nearly as big of a deal.  However, if this ends up being long term, JJO could be right.

Chip over at the chronicle says it’s time for Houston to “shuffle the deck.”  He covers a lot of ground in his post but the part that really jumped out to me was the stuff on Coop:

“Ah, yes, and that brings us back to Mr. Cooper . . . again. From the outside, it appears he has no control of this team. If that’s the case, it won’t be long before the inner murmurs and grumblings begin to leak out. Then, it gets ugly quick.”

The more I watch this team this season the more I think Chip is right.  I like Cecil but the past few games seem like Coop has…well, not much of an idea of what to do.  I understand he is in a tough position with the rain-out forcing his hand with the pen but perhaps pulling Wandy wasn’t the answer.

I’m not ready to give up hope in early May.  Lance Berkman is hitting better over the past 4 games and our starting pitching staff has looked decent.  We just really really really really really really really need to get the bullpen back in order and get our team healthy…which could take a while.

Richard Justice thinks Houston is smart for extending Coop.

JJO, who has been taking the Astros to task recently, thinks this will give Cooper some breathing room.  Check out the article for quotes from Miggy as well as Bourn.

Chip Bailey has his take here.

I like Cooper.  I think anyone who can manage a club with such a terrible run differential as the Astros had last year, combined with the question marks surrounding our pitching staff, and almost get them to the post season deserves an extension.

People say Cooper has lost the vets in the clubhouse and I really hope that this is not the case, and if it is, this will help out the situation some.

Who thinks Cooper lasts through the season?

Here’s to hoping.

This is all I got from chron.com and JJO:

“Hoping to lift doubts about Cecil Cooper being a lame duck, the Astros pick up the manager’s extension for the 2010 season.

“This is so we can move forward,” Astros owner Drayton McLane said before the team’s press conference with Cooper.”

Not much from the chron but interesting indeed.  I was hoping they would do this so Coop could relax a little bit.  Hopefully this will somehow translate to some more W’s.

Coop must have run out of ink in his pin.  He is using the same line up tonight as last night.  Here is to hoping Jason Smith doesn’t go 0-4 again tonight.

Guess Coop doesn’t have much of a choice with all the back problems the Stros are having.  “Doctor says I need a back-e-otomy” – Sir Smokes A Lot – Half  Baked

Pittsburgh 7 Houston 0

Moehler left the game early with a knee injury adding injury to insult in his 2 outings this season.

Houston’s bats are completely dormant right now. The Astros haven’t scored a run in 18 innings and only had four hits today. Two of their hits were doubles by Tejada and Keppinger.

Thank the lord Houston has a day off tomorrow. Hopefully it will give them a chance to regroup and literally come out swinging against Ohlendorf on Wednesday in support of Mike Hampton.

Btw, why give your hottest hitter in Michael Bourn a day off? Maybe Coop is going slot him higher in the line up on Wednesday?

Who knows, but lets hope that between now and then Houston finds their bats.

Bad day on the mound today for the Stros. From astros.com:

Stros at the plate: “Kazuo Matsui went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI and Hunter Pence went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Edwin Maysonet hit a solo home run to left field off right-hander Chad Durbin in the sixth inning.”

That’s two 3-3 days for Kaz in the past 3 games.  Maysonet showing some pop while vying for that back up infield position, making the decision even tougher for Coop.

Stros on the bump: “Left-hander Mike Hampton allowed seven hits, seven runs, three walks and three home runs in five innings. He struck out three” From Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle: “The Phillies hit four homers off the Astros, with Wesley Wright giving up four runs, a homer and two walks in one inning to raise his ERA to 3.60. Chris Sampson pitched two innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. ”

Tough day on the mound for Hampton and Houston but, those days are gonna happen, just ask Mike Hampton:

“”I’ll have one during the season, too, probably more than just one,” he said. “That’s just part of it. You try to minimize the damage as much as you can, but I made some good pitches at times and there were some times I left the ball over the plate and got hit.” ”

In Hampy’s defense, Coop says he got squeezed a little.

Alyson Footer from astros.mlb.com reports that all is well for the Magic Wandy and Chad Paronto:

“By the end of the workday Wednesday, two Astros pitchers had breathed sighs of relief — Chad Paronto, after discovering his shoulder injury isn’t as serious as he first thought, and Wandy Rodriguez, after pitching four innings without feeling any lingering effects from a fingernail issue that hampered him in his last outing.”

Although Coop wont come right out and say it, it looks like Wandy will be the clubs number 2 starter while Paronto will probably start the year in Round Rock.

JJO on Wandy at chon.com: “Although Cecil Cooper has been coy about how he will line up his rotation, it appears evident that the Astros want to at least have Rodriguez lined up as an option to start the second game of the season.

Barring a setback, Rodriguez will start Saturday on three days of rest instead of the usual four. That would put him in line to start an exhibition game again on April 2 and then April 7 against the Chicago Cubs on the second day of the season.

“We’re going to bring him back a little sooner so we can try to line him up a little bit,” Cooper said.

Asked what he was lining Rodriguez up for, Cooper retreated back into his recent stance.

“I’m lining it up,” he said with a chuckle. “You can figure it and fumble all you want.”

Cooper was pleased after watching Rodriguez throw four scoreless innings to beat the Mets 8-0 Tuesday at Osceola County Stadium.”

Houston scored 10 runs today to out slug the Florida Fish 10-8.

From astros.mlb.com:

Stros at the plate: “Lance Berkman homered in the third and the fifth, driving in three runs. Michael Bourn drove in a run in the fifth with an RBI double. Miguel Tejada drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh. ”

Good games today from both Berkman and Bourn.  Killer B’s anyone?

Stros on the mound: “Mike Hampton allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out four. Chad Paronto left the game after one-third of an inning with a right shoulder muscle strain, and Gilbert De La Vara yielded two runs over two-thirds of an inning. ”

Hampton got hit a little but looked good on the mound as he kept the ball down for the most part.  Sampson pitched a scoreless inning, keep up the good work Samp.

From chron.com:

Cooper on the bats: “Lance put some good swings up,” Cecil Cooper said. “Lance had some great swings today. Every at-bat was good swings. It was good to see that. Kaz had some good swings today. Tejada had some good swings. They all did. There were quite a few. It was nice to see J.R. swing the bat like that. Today was probably our best day swinging the bats.”

Cooper on the arms: “Hampton was very good, got his pitch count up to the high 80s, so that’s good,” Cooper said. “He pitched down. I liked the way he pitched today. Bud (Norris) I thought was very good. His fastball was exploding out of his hand today.”

From Astros.mlb.com

“The Astros trimmed four from their Spring Training roster on Tuesday, optioning right-hander Brad James to Triple-A Round Rock while also reassigning catchers Jason Castro and Brian Esposito and right-hander Sergio Perez to Minor League camp. ”

No surprises here.  However, Coop had some comments about the re-assigned players:  “Castro had been real impressive here, and we felt it was time to send him over there so he could get a lot more work,” Cooper said. “James and Perez are guys we like, but they seemed to be a little overwhelmed by all this stuff.” ” -chron.com

The Astros fell to the Braves today 8-7 after their bullpen coughed up the lead.

From Astros.com

Stros at the plate: “Jason Michaels and Miguel Tejada recorded doubles off Jorge Campillo in a three-run first inning. Chris Johnson produced a third-inning sacrifice fly and then added an RBI double off Mike Gonzalez in the fifth inning”

Stros on the mound: Pretty much, Roy: “Oswalt made a successful exhibition season debut, allowing two runs and one hit in three innings. Two of the four strikeouts he recorded came at the expense of reigning National League batting champion Chipper Jones. ”

I caught some of this game in between classes at school today.  When I tuned in, the bottom of the 7th or top of the 8th, Houston was up 7-2 and Arias was on the mound.  He pitched really well and had a 1-2-3 inning.  Apparently after that Atlanta scored four off of Sergio Perez and two off of Gilbert De La Vara.

Jose de Jesus Ortiz has some nice insight to Roy and Brandon Backe’s performance: ”

“Oswaltstruck out the side in the first inning and gave up two runs over three innings with four strikeouts Thursday against the Braves. At a time in camp when starters are limited to one or maybe two innings, the veteran righthander tossed three innings and 53 pitches.

“I’m ahead of last year by a lot,” he said. “Everything feels pretty good. The ball was a little slick today. But everything felt pretty well. I’m way ahead of schedule from last year, for sure. I think I started earlier and it helped out a lot.

“To go out and throw 50 pitches your first outing is pretty good, especially getting up and down. That’s the biggest thing. You can throw 50 pitches before you come, but if you do it consistently it’s a little different than getting up and down, getting up and down, getting up and down. Today was good. You get to go out there three different times and get loose. I felt pretty well.”

In his only start before heading to the World Baseball Classic, Oswalt held the Braves to one hit, a two-run home run by David Ross in the second inning.

He walked one batter, hit another and threw 34 of his 53 pitches for strikes, finishing with a 94-mph fastball for a called third strike on Chipper Jones. He also struck out Jones in the first inning on a changeup, a pitch he has worked on this spring.

“It’s feeling better,” he said. “I’m getting a little more confidence in it.”

Jones was impressed with the changeup, saying, “The bottom fell out of it.”

That is exciting stuff about Roy.

Coop on Roy, Backe, and Arias: “Roy and Brandon both looked very, very sharp,” Cecil Cooper said. “Roy in particular was crisp. I saw a lot of life on his fastball. He actually threw some very good breaking balls too. He had some pretty good motion. And he looked like he was pretty close to midseason form.

“I thought Brandon pitched pretty well. He kept the ball down and he used his changeup. He was just going to throw fastball, changeups today. I thought Brandon threw the ball pretty well too. I was impressed with Arias too.”"
