Good news: Berkman and Lee each hit homers, Berkmans first from the left side. Mike Hampton pitched 6 strong innings.
Tejada 3-4, 2B, 2 R
Berkman 2-4, 2B, R, K
Lee 1-3, 3 RBI, 2B, Sac Fly, K
Pence 1-3, RBI
Keppinger 1-4, 2B
Hampton 0-3, K
Erstad 0-1, K
The real story of today’s game is the performance by Mike Hampton.
Mike Hampton 6 IP, 8K, 1BB, 4 hits, no runs allowed
Geoff Geary 1 IP, 1BB, 2 hits, no runs allowed
Houston (2-6)
Tomorrow is the first game for Russ Ortiz and he will face Jeff Karstens.
Houston has got to get something going against Ohlendorf in support of Hampton. Thanks to the Spurs I wont get to see Houston’s game tonight but I will be listening thanks to mlb.com.
For those of you in the same boat as I am, there are other ways to follow the game. Check out Zachary Levine’s live blog at chron.com or Astros County. Not sure if County is blogging tonight’s game but they usually do.
Here are a few links until the line ups are posted:
Richard Justice has declared war on Ed Wade.
The Unofficial Scorer Zach Levine, the same Zach Levine with the live blog tonight, looks at the Astros patience at the plate. Surprising results if you ask me.
Chip Bailey reflects on the players the Astros have traded and what Houston should have gotten for them.
Finally Gerry Faley at Fox Sports compares Houston to the Washington Nationals and decides Houston is worse off. The Nationals have a plan apparently.
Pittsburgh 7 Houston 0
Moehler left the game early with a knee injury adding injury to insult in his 2 outings this season.
Houston’s bats are completely dormant right now. The Astros haven’t scored a run in 18 innings and only had four hits today. Two of their hits were doubles by Tejada and Keppinger.
Thank the lord Houston has a day off tomorrow. Hopefully it will give them a chance to regroup and literally come out swinging against Ohlendorf on Wednesday in support of Mike Hampton.
Btw, why give your hottest hitter in Michael Bourn a day off? Maybe Coop is going slot him higher in the line up on Wednesday?
Who knows, but lets hope that between now and then Houston finds their bats.
Bad day on the mound today for the Stros. From astros.com:
Stros at the plate: “Kazuo Matsui went 3-for-3 with a double, run scored and RBI and Hunter Pence went 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Edwin Maysonet hit a solo home run to left field off right-hander Chad Durbin in the sixth inning.”
That’s two 3-3 days for Kaz in the past 3 games. Maysonet showing some pop while vying for that back up infield position, making the decision even tougher for Coop.
Stros on the bump: “Left-hander Mike Hampton allowed seven hits, seven runs, three walks and three home runs in five innings. He struck out three” From Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle: “The Phillies hit four homers off the Astros, with Wesley Wright giving up four runs, a homer and two walks in one inning to raise his ERA to 3.60. Chris Sampson pitched two innings, allowing three hits and two unearned runs. ”
Tough day on the mound for Hampton and Houston but, those days are gonna happen, just ask Mike Hampton:
“”I’ll have one during the season, too, probably more than just one,” he said. “That’s just part of it. You try to minimize the damage as much as you can, but I made some good pitches at times and there were some times I left the ball over the plate and got hit.” ”
In Hampy’s defense, Coop says he got squeezed a little.
Houston’s Grapefruit League record: Astros 9-18-3
Houston scored 10 runs today to out slug the Florida Fish 10-8.
From astros.mlb.com:
Stros at the plate: “Lance Berkman homered in the third and the fifth, driving in three runs. Michael Bourn drove in a run in the fifth with an RBI double. Miguel Tejada drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the seventh. ”
Good games today from both Berkman and Bourn. Killer B’s anyone?
Stros on the mound: “Mike Hampton allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings, striking out four. Chad Paronto left the game after one-third of an inning with a right shoulder muscle strain, and Gilbert De La Vara yielded two runs over two-thirds of an inning. ”
Hampton got hit a little but looked good on the mound as he kept the ball down for the most part. Sampson pitched a scoreless inning, keep up the good work Samp.
From chron.com:
Cooper on the bats: “Lance put some good swings up,” Cecil Cooper said. “Lance had some great swings today. Every at-bat was good swings. It was good to see that. Kaz had some good swings today. Tejada had some good swings. They all did. There were quite a few. It was nice to see J.R. swing the bat like that. Today was probably our best day swinging the bats.”
Cooper on the arms: “Hampton was very good, got his pitch count up to the high 80s, so that’s good,” Cooper said. “He pitched down. I liked the way he pitched today. Bud (Norris) I thought was very good. His fastball was exploding out of his hand today.”
Ken Davindoff of Baseball Insider judges each team in the majors on their offseason success. He groups the teams into 4 categories: winners, winners with downside, losers with upside, and losers. Care to guess where the Astros rank?
If you said losers you are correct!
Davindorf: “Losers: 3. Houston: Despite some internal lobbying, GM Ed Wade wouldn’t even consider a one-year deal for Andy Pettitte”
Andy Pettitte? Really? That’s the reason why we are “losers”? Would our rotation be that much more stable with another aging hurler?
I guess it was a short column and he couldn’t go in to detail. If he could have I imagine he would have said that GM Ed Wade was handcuffed by the economic situation facing the Houston Astros instead of the whole Andy Pettitte bit.
Losers? Maybe. We lost 2 key components to our second half push last season in IF/OF Ty Wigginton and SP Randy Wolf. However, our pitching staff would still be considered suspect even with Wolf so I think the fact that we swapped Mike Hampton for Randy Wolf isn’t a big deal, as long as Mikey can stay healthy. He likes it!
And Ty? Well, you got me there. Defensively he wasn’t real sharp but his missing bat is gonna hurt. I think we start the season with a Blum Boone platoon (poet and didn’t know it) and, if Chris Johnson keeps up his Spring Training Numbers for the rest of March and continues to do well in AAA, he will be our 3rd baseman come June. Maybe sooner. Once this occurs, I think the Wiggy Wolf loss is gonna sting less. Guess we will see.
Also, if Wade can have success with his Rule 5 draftees as he has in the past, Houston’s offseason could turn out better than people currently think. Lou Palmisano and Gilbert De La Vara are both making a push to make the club out of Spring Training. And if they can repeat Wesley Wright’s success of last season and make this club better, props to Ed Wade.
Of course, that is a lot of “ifs.” As of now, Houston’s offseason looks unproductive, but the results of this season will be the true testimony to the clubs offseason moves.
Today’s game against the Yankees ended with a 5-5 tie after the New York Yankees ran out of pitchers.
From astros.mlb.com
Astros at the plate: “Geoff Blum drove in Houston’s first run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning, plating Lance Berkman. Matt Kata knocked a solo homer off Anthony Clagett in the fifth, and Chris Johnson drove in two more runs with a hit in the eighth. Brian Bogusevic knocked in the game-tying run with an infield hit later in the inning. ”
Astros on the mound: “Hampton was slated to throw three innings, but a high pitch count limited him to just two. Hampton yielded four runs on six hits, including an RBI triple by Cabrera that contributed to a three-run first. Jose Valverde struck out two in one inning, and Ortiz allowed one run over three frames.”
Astros Grapefruit League Record : 1-4-1
I’ve had the chance to watch a little Houston Baseball over the weekend and last week thanks to ESPN and the MLB Network. Chris Johnson is a good looking prospect. I think the kid contributes to the club sometime this year.
In other news, Miguel Tejada has decided to pitch for the Japanese squad in the World Baseball Classic and Wandy Rodriguez has a rib-cage injury. He is expected to miss two starts.
Stros at the plate : “Jason Smith put the Astros on the board first, driving in Darin Erstad with an RBI triple in the fifth frame. Michael Bourn knocked a double in the sixth to drive in Drew Sutton. Mark Saccomanno tripled to lead off the seventh and scored when center fielder Roger Bernadina overthrew home plate after fielding Humberto Quintero’s fly ball. Reggie Abercrombie drove in two with a double later in that inning, and Chris Johnson knocked a solo homer in the eighth”
Stros on the mound : “Mike Hampton turned a rough beginning into a solid outing, allowing no runs over two scoreless frames. He hit the first batter he faced and walked the next two to load the bases, but he struck out Austin Kearns and coaxed a double play from Jesus Flores to end the inning. Russ Ortiz, a fifth-starter hopeful, allowed one hit over two innings”
Sounds like Hampton got off to a shaky start but settled down. From JJO of the Houston Chronicle, Hampton on his own performance and Cooper on Hampton:
“My arm felt good,” Hampton said after throwing two hitless innings. “My body felt good. Obviously location wasn’t where it needs to be, but all in all I felt good out there. Pitches and location will come. I got through with no hits, no runs. It wasn’t pretty at times, but I got there.”
“Mike seemed to be just a little bit tentative early, missing the zone a little bit,” Cooper said. “But then after … the first three (guys) he started to pitch a little bit and was real sharp. Russ, I thought, threw the ball really well.”
Apparently Hampton’s start was delayed due to the governor of Florida running late.
Houston’s Spring Training Record 1-0-0
So far so good.
Lance Berkman, Miguel Tejada, Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence all sat out of today’s game. Berkman, Tejada, and Lee will all play tomorrow.
Here is the lineup Cooper used for the game today:
Matsui 2b
Bourn cf
Pence rf
Blum 3b
Michaels lf
Erstad dh
Boone 1b
Smith ss
Towles c
Houston will play the Atlanta Braves tomorrow at Disney starting at 1:05 ET. Roy Oswalt will make the start.
